Student study notes on ethical, moral and social issues

Euthanasia and assisted suicide

Mark Russell, Chief Executive of the Church Army and a member of the Archbishops’ College of Evangelists in the Church of England, explores the different types of euthanasia and assisted suicide, and looks at Christian attitudes towards this highly-charged social and ethical issue.

Poverty

Andrew Cowley, a Baptist minister and Tearfund UK staff member, explores the ethical issues surrounding poverty, asking how Christians respond to suffering as a result of poverty and hardship.

Marriage, the family and divorce

Gavin Collins, Archdeacon of the Meon in Hampshire, and former Solicitor, presents a Christian view of relationships. After giving an overview of marriage, he goes on to consider partnership and commitment, the role of God in the relationship, divorce and remarriage after divorce, and Jesus’ view on marriage and divorce.

Life after death

David Winter, formerly Head of BBC Religion, says that for Christians, belief in life after death is absolutely fundamental. ‘Take away belief in what the New Testament calls ‘the resurrection’ and there is really nothing much left,’ he says. In this article, he looks at Christian beliefs about life beyond death.

The environment

Jean Harrison, former Education Officer at Christian Aid, looks at what Christians believe about the environment, and then asks how that informs the way they live and act in our world.

Society

Jane Savill, Religious Education Adviser in the Church of England Diocese of London, looks at Christian attitudes towards society. What do Christians believe about society and how have they sought to change it?

Abortion

Geoff Marshall-Taylor, formerly Executive Producer, BBC Education, looks at Christian attitudes to abortion. Christians, like the members of the other main world religions, have important beliefs about life and these ideas influence their views on abortion. However, Christians disagree about whether abortion should ever be allowed and, if it is, about the circumstances in which it can be allowed.
